The family has never tried an RV vacation; Texas being so huge, and such far distances for a road trip. Colorado offers closer destinations when it comes to driving to national parks, so we decided to give it a try. What an amazing adventure it became.
First stop, our friends Mark and Linda, who moved from Matt’s neighborhood to S Dakota recently. Their idyllic country life is a far cry from the city of Denver, and they never looked back. Linda lets her chickens out of the barn each morning to gather fresh eggs for the day. Her egg salad is to die for by the way:). Hanna learned how to properly feed and hug the hens. She was in heaven. The neighbors surrounding their house all had horses to feed and pet too.

The real treat came when we heard the Amish lived in the hood and held a farmers market every Saturday. We were the first to arrive, so excited to get the best jams, cakes, cookies, and pies. I would love to share pictures, but they are very reticent to be photographed:(. That’s ok, we caught one on the way to market, passing us on the road:)

Mount Rushmore is just a short distance from Linda and Mark’s house, in fact on a clear day you can actually see it from their back porch. We’re so jealous. We loved seeing it up close and personal over Memorial Weekend. I don’t have the words to describe the feeling of patriotism this national monument evoked. However, the kids enjoyed the gift shop more:).

As if the national monument wasn’t enough Rapid City offers tourists its own garden of dinosaur statutes. Hanna couldn’t get enough of these climb able relics. It’s a lot more fun than the no touch skeletons in the museums.
Rapid City also has one of the largest collections of Indian art. There are over 71,000 Indian residents in the state, made up of the members of the Great Sioux Nation. Some are very talented artists, we found. Using every medium available locally, quartz, onyx, alabaster, and some very creative use of paper, the gallery in town was fascinatingly creative.

We could have stayed in S Dakota for the entire week and never seen all it has to offer. We reluctantly left our friends and headed to Wyoming for The Grand Tetons. We had no idea what to expect; more beautiful Rockies similar to what we live near? Not by a long shot. It was like the Swiss Alps in the US. Majestic and craggy with extreme elevations, the Tetons are nothing short of breath breathtaking. Art by God!!

We chose the Tetons this trip because it’s less crowded than Yellowstone, but after arriving we realized it’s so worth the effort to get there. There was a wonderful trail around Jenny Lake that provided more wildlife sightings than we had seen in the 5 plus years in Colorado. There were 2 bear sightings, both the less aggressive black bears, however we did bring bear spray as grizzlies do reside there as well. I caught a moose shot or two, but you have to look closely to see the capture standing at the edge of a stream. Matt was determined to finish the visit with a bit of paddleboarding. As you can imagine, it was a little too chilly for Mamou, but the Viking kiddos loved it.

Our little motorhome offered a cozy and comfortable way to travel. We brought foam toppers for the beds, which I highly recommend. It was so nice not to have to make pit stops since we were traveling long distances. We did have a few setbacks, a tire blew out, a previous renter broke off the key in the lock, the door handle broke off in Matt’s hand. All fixable and minor blips on the computer screen of life. We’re looking forward to our next great adventure.
