Literally God only knows what possessed me, at my age, to start a new career as a teacher. I had thought about it before, but the need to make enough to get the kids through college and help Robert build our retirement, stopped that thought in its tracks. Also, at the time, it made sense to work with my husband as he traveled around the country helping people rebuild their homes and their lives after natural disasters. After Robert passed, the desire to continue on that road passed also. So, in my early 60’s, I went back to school to get certified to teach. It gave me a goal and the need to get up every morning with a focus for the day. My thought was to work in schools that were predominantly “free lunch”, with kids who needed motivation and nurturing. I’ve tried to stay true to that ideal, although it isn’t always easy. The truth is, at the end of each day that I teach, I receive so much more from them than they get from me. I hope to continue this for years to come; it is so personally rewarding. I envy teachers who chose this profession early in their lives, they’ve touched so many in such a positive way. It brings tears to my eyes to think of how many have heard from their students later in life, giving them thanks for their efforts and influence. Tres and I spoke of his 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Adams, the last time we visited. That year, with her influence, was pivotal in his future education. Thank you Ms. Adams wherever you are. I hope you are enjoying a well-earned retirement.
